Cavvanbah, the Aboriginal name for the area meaning “meeting place” until European settlement began in 1770 when Captain Cook found safe anchorage in the area and named Cape Byron after John Byron, circumnavigator of the world.
The town has several beaches which are popular for swimming, surfing and people watching. Most popular of which, the Main Beach, directly in front of the town centre.
Temperate and tropical waters merge at Byron Bay, making it a popular area for scuba diving and snorkeling. Most diving is done at Julian Rocks, only a few minutes boat ride from Main Beach.
The town lies close to subtropical rain-forests, and areas such as the Nightcap National Park with the Minyon Falls are all within easy reach of the town. The Byron Bay scenery makes it a perfect setting for a number of air based activities such as skydiving, ballooning and gliding.
This area is also known for its wildlife, with the whale watching industry a significant part of the local tourism economy.
